SLPP in another shameful public relations circus : ‘Dry yaiye coba shame’

Tuesday, June 26th, 2012

If you are in a hole, stop digging further because the more you dig , the more you sink deeper in the mire. The opposition Sierra Leone People’s Party ( SLPP ) may never understand  this message and as a result disgrace and disappointment will always haunt their camp. For them, politics is a circus , a ‘pappy’ show and outright deception . It is not based on reality. They must keep sinking more and more into the mire because they do not believe in facing facts and  accepting reality.

POOR FELLAS. THEY ARE BEING USED AS PAWNS ON THE SLPP CHESSBOARD OF DECEIT

SLPP Presidential candidate Maada Bio came to Britain expecting to pull off the miracle of the century at last by entering the United States where he was once expelled for domestic violence and where he is blacklisted for extrajudicial murder and grave human rights abuses while he was a junta leader in Sierra Leone. Without taking their time to first ensure that Maada Bio has received the visa, SLPP  supporters, who are past masters at deception and putting up facades, prepared posters and handbills and circulated them all over the world that their presidential candidate was coming to America  and that  dinners, talk programs and fundraising ceremonies had been planned in his honour. In discussing forums around the internet and in the pages of their online newspapers, they gloated and ridiculed those they accused of declaring that their pathetic presidential candidate will never enter the U.S.

It turned out that as usual, the SLPP was only involved in deception. Bio was not coming to the U.S. He had not been granted an entry visa . To the shock and dismay of a watching diaspora and nation, the dates of the massive Bio programs in the U.S.  came and passed. There was no Maada Bio. There was no dinner or fundraiser in Ohio or Texas, Phildelphia or New Jersey, California or New York. Shame quickly enveloped SLPP  supporters all over the United States and Sierra Leone.

And yesterday, with his tail between his legs, Maada Bio sneaked back into Sierra Leone . And  how do you think the SLPP  handled the shame and disappointment ? Any serious political party would have given themselves a serious period of  introspection into their travails with the hope of finding out why the the nation and the outside world keep rebuffing the party, AND  find solutions. This is what any political party that believes in facing reality would have done. But for the SLPP ,the merry-go-round of deceit, deception and political circus must keep spinning. The Sierra Leonean public and the outside world must continue to be fooled. This is the political mantra of the SLPP.

The SLPP  got together a few hundreds of supporters and staged another circus show in the capital in the guise of a welcoming program where  FIRST OF ALL THEY WILL BRAG THAT THEY TURNED THE CITY GREEN and where , instead of licking his wounds , Bio would talk big and rationalize deceitfully that he never wanted to enter the U.S. and that when he wants to come to America , he will. What a shameful display of deceit . Did Bio think that nobody knew what happened ?  He wanted to enter the U.S. He planned, endeavoured and attempted to enter the U.S. BUT he failed because he was not granted a visa by the U.S. To put it straight, he was denied an entry visa by the U.S. The Americans did not allow him to enter their country because of his human rights record and his extrajudicial killings.

The SLPP  are fooling nobody but themselves. The whole of Sierra Leone knows that Maada Bio did not get a U.S. entry visa. And the whole nation knows the implications of Bio not being given a  U.S. visa. He is not fit to be President . The U.S. action speaks louder than words  . And when America speaks, the whole world has spoken. And when America speaks, the whole world listens. No whitewashing of the shameful dilapidation and nauseating  signals and reality on the wall will work.

Yesterday’s public relations circus will not have its desired effect –Fool the nation. Whether a massive crown turned out or not, it was a circus show to cover up disgrace  and to Sierra Leoneans, it was  ”Dry Yaiye coba shame. ” It was the spirit of impunity at work  to cover the SLPP’s shame.

The SLPP  should stop all these  deceit and empty shows. and face reality.

Maada Bio cannot be President of Sierra Leone . He is not fit to be President of Sierra Leone and the SLPP  should stop imposing him on the nation.

Dr.Christiana Thorpe assures UN that Sierra Leone’s November elections will be free, fair and credible thumbnail

A very important meeting dealing with Sierra Leone’s forthcoming elections was held at the United Nations Friday June 22, 2012.  At the meeting, which was held under the aegis of the UN PeaceBuilding Commission Special Sierra Leone country Configuration and attended by stakeholders in the International Community, the Chair of the National Elections Commission, Dr. Christiana Thorpe, made an authoritative presentation about all the measures and structures that have been put in place to ensure free, fair and credible Presidential, Legislative and local Council Elections in November.  (Photo: Dr. Thorpe in a discussion with Ambassador Kamara (right) and the Director and Deputy Head of the PBC Support Office, Mr Ejeviome Eloho Otobo (left))

Stakeholders in Sierra Leone joined the meeting by teleconference and they also gave detailed presentations about preparations and challenges as Sierra Leone heads into very crucial elections in November.  The participants from Freetown included the new Executive Representative of the UN Secretary General,  Mr. Jens Anders Toyberg-Frandzen; the  Inspector General of Police, Francis Munu ; the Registrar of the Political Parties Registration Commission, Mr. Abraham John; and representatives of the  National Elections Watch, Civil Society and other groups .

(Dr. Thorpe (second from left) poses with the chair of the PBC Sierra Leone configuration, Ambassador Guilermo RIshchynski, Ambassador Keh Kamara and her sister Patricia Omo Thorpe of the Save Sierra Leone Foundation)

Dr. Thorpe, who is held in very high esteem within the corridors of the UN for the excellent Presidential and Legislative Elections she delivered the nation in 2007, told the UN that Sierra Leone was moving not only towards elections but to a progressive and stable country.  “We have finished the Biometrics registration process and voters registration cards will soon be ready for distribution,” she disclosed.  According to Dr. Thorpe, the provisional list has 2.6 million registered voters.  She stressed that a very important aspect of the process is the inclusion of the entire voting populace to give everybody a sense of participation, which would in turn make the elections peaceful and credible.

Dr. Thorpe said that NEC is presently preparing a staff of 9,000 people for the exhibition process which will start on June 30 and end on July 20. She disclosed that once the registration had been fully completed and the missing names included, the voters list will be ready in September, from where the process will move on to nominations and the campaign.  She said that only people with legitimate receipts will have their missing names added back to the voters’ register.

She welcomed international observers who would provide a psychological impact and give confidence to the public that the elections are free and fair.  Stressing the important need for these observers , she called on them  to go to Sierra Leone and observe the elections to  help make the process credible. She also told the UN about  the relevant legal framework for the elections which  has been given presidential assent . The NEC, she went on, was working on abridging the legal framework  to make it accessible to members of the public.

On funding, the eloquent Elections Boss said that the  NEC was on track until the end of June . She commended the Government of Sierra Leone and the International Community for their financial support.

Talking about the challenges facing the process presently, Dr. Thorpe drew attention to the dire need for  transportation for the NEC, the Police and the army to help NEC deliver services.  She commended the Sierra Leone Police for providing 14 trucks for the registration process.  She told the UN that her Commission needed more  vehicles to service the 3, 000 polling centres and that an appeal has been made to Nigeria to help the NEC  by providing the needed vehicles.

Dr. Thorpe said that the other challenge is the political atmosphere in the country.  She emphasized  the National Elections Commission ‘s commitment to  a peaceful atmosphere . She said that her Commission was working with different stakeholders to  make  the elections process inclusive and accountable to   help facilitate a peaceful atmosphere .  She disclosed that  she tries to make the process inclusive by meeting with the press regularly and engaging  the various political parties on a regular basis. She is also planning interactive sessions with the NEC,  the Human Rights Commission , the  PPRC , the National Elections Watch Civil Society  and other relevant bodies.  She said that NEC has also realized  the need to address all political parties and to motivate them at the district level where the chaos usually starts.

Still talking about the challenges, Dr. Thorpe  also acknowledged the serious concerns expressed by members of the International Community about the provocative journalism in Sierra Leone , which according to them,  has the potential to create chaos during the elections.  In  their contributions, some members of the International Community accused the Sierra Leone media of harmful reporting and analyses of political events . Agreeing with them,  Dr. Thorpe described some Sierra Leone news media as “naughty”  and she  condemned the tendency of the media to fan tribal and regional flames , but she assured the UN that everything was being done by NEC to neutralize the effects of these irresponsible newspapers through the NEC’s  own program of media and public education. She stressed that thankfully  only 20% of the public read newspapers and the other 80% do not have access to them . She told the UN that NEC  has established Ward electoral committees . NEC  has  recruited members who do not need to be literate but live , sleep and breathe in their communities. They will be tasked with the responsibility to go door-to-door sensitizing Sierra Leoneans in different  languages about the need for national unity and peaceful elections.

In his contribution, the Deputy Permanent Representative for Legal Affairs, Ambassador Osman Keh Kamara , expressed thanks to the ERSG, PPRC and other members of the panel who teleconferenced from Freetown. He also commended the PBCSO and the International Community for their support to Sierra Leone.  The Ambassador added that “We have heard from the Elections Commissioner,  who has underlined the need for a  peaceful political atmosphere . She has also spoken about  the role of the press, political parties and district chairpersons in creating credibility to the process”.   He  then  called on the International Community to continue their unflinching support to the nation.

Kabbs-Kanu, RUF Lies, APC’s Media Strategy & Final Warning to SLPP : Rejoinder By Kabs Kanu Posted by Cocorioko Newspaper on June 21, 20

  • An article with the above heading appeared in the Awareness Times newspaper today. The writer, Dr. Sylvia Blyden, was gracious enough to inform me last night that the article will be appearing in the paper this morning.  I also informed Sylvia Blyden last night that I will provide a rejoinder to the article . Blyden  also posted in the FACEBOOK forum : SIERRA LEONE ISSUES.

  • I thought there were few things about the article that need to be clarified.

  •  DR. CHRISTIANA THORPE :  A WOMAN OF INTEGRITY , FAIRNESS AND CREDIBILITY

  • Today, one of the most respected people in life, to me,   is Dr. Christiana Thorpe. I respect her because she conducted the best presidential and legislative elections in Sierra Leone and Africa in 2007. I will respect her until my dying day.  People all over the world consider those elections  even better than recent ones staged in the U.S. I have verbally told Dr.Thorpe that what she did in 2007 even helped to rebrand Sierra Leone and the continent of Africa.

However, when Dr. Thorpe was first appointed by President Ahmed Tejan Kabbah in 2004, I was one of the journalists who thought it was not a fair appointment to the APC . The article I wrote about this is in the old Cocorioko archives. I never made any sexually based allegations. My contention was about conflict of interests since the same Kabbah who was SLPP , had already given Madam Thorpe a national award. My argument then was that it was conflict of interests . It turned out that I was wrong and I stated this in many articles in 2007 in which I proclaimed Dr.Thorpe as my NATIONAL HEROINE after she staged the best elections ever in Africa .

  • I criticized  the appointment of Dr.Thorpe on the principle that because she had been given a national award by President Kabbah,  and Kabbah was SLPP and the SLPP would be contesting the elections with the APC, it was conflict of interests for him to have made her electoral commissioner. I found out later that I was wrong. It turned out that many of us who took that stand did not really understand how incorruptible  Dr.Thorpe is;  She  proved to be a woman of integrity , credibility, fairness and fear of God by the fair manner she went on to conduct the elections and  I said that when I meet her I will frankly acknowledge to her that I was wrong about her and that she had become my heroine and one of the individuals I will now admire and respect throughout my life .

Over six years ago, in May 2006, in a fit of rage, Revd Kabs-Kanu of COCORIOKO viciously attacked my person because I defended Dr. Christiana Thorpe against some sexually based allegations he was levying against her. He accused Thorpe of being an SLPP agent and me the same. Kabbs-Kanu was quite vitriolic. However, after series of personal attacks which lasted for many months and which I mostly ignored, Revd Kabbs-Kanu, of his own volition in 2007, issued an unreserved apology to me which he published widely on his website and in email discussion groups.

Revd Kabbs-Kanu’s apology, in which he retracted his vicious words calling me an RUF rebel, is still available on the Internet. He explained to the world, that as a true Christian, his conscience dictated to him to withdraw the false allegations he had written against me. He apologised to me without any prodding from anyone. It was the correct thing to do. He knew what he had written about me was false. That apology was many years ago. Since that time, I have forgiven him and the two of us have moved on past that incident of six years ago.
Now, this week, I see the SLPP and their disgraced History revisionist Lans Gberie, in desperation to demonise me than handle the issues I am raising, are re-hashing those six years old libellous comment of Kabbs-Kanu which the author himself had long since apologised for.

Sierra Leone’s libel laws are very clear. It appears Lans Gberie and some of the SLPP journalists, having succeeded to get persons within the Judiciary to ‘go-slow’ on cases inimical to their party’s interest, believe they are immune from prosecution for criminal libel. I honestly wonder if some of these SLPP journalists have legal advisers!
The truth is that for now, I am way too busy to engage in law courts and IMC theatrics but there might reach a point when I will say Enough is Enough. I am being attacked simply because the reading populace TRUSTS me. My assertions are easily accepted as gospel truths to the majority of the reading public. I have quite a significant following inside and outside of the country.

So, when I criticise the APC, agents within that party will try to reduce the import of my words by alleging I am an SLPP member. Vice versa for when I criticise the SLPP. The fact however is that I am NOT a member of the APC nor am I a member of SLPP. I do have political ambitions but not anytime soon.

SLPP in particular has been going out of its way to publish lies about me. Not once, not twice, they have extended the attacks to my parents especially my dear mother. All the time that APC used to attack me when I was opining on issues which SLPP would benefit from, the APC’s WE YONE newspaper never attacked my parents. No APC Spokesman has ever attacked my parents! Yes, APC has sent police officers to ransack my office and APC invited me to CID of Police for questioning many times. APC even charged me to court but the APC has never attacked my parents! I know I have never insulted Maada Bio’s mother or John Benjamin’s mother or mother of any member of the SLPP hierarchy. Why the SLPP should think Mammy Cuss is the way forward, I do not know. They are making a bitter mistake by involving my parents into their nasty politics; a very bitter mistake!

Infact, as arrogant as I sound, I honestly think one of the best things going for Julius Maada Bio right now, is the fact that Sylvia Blyden is not an APC member. Had I been an APC party member or had I wielded any clout within Ernest Koroma Government, SLPP and Bio would have been singing a different song right now. SLPP and Bio should count themselves lucky that they are dealing with the likes of Alhaji I.B. Kargbo and his crew of ‘Public Relations & Media Specialists’ of which I am NOT a member.

For the record, let me state again that I think the APC led Government is going about its media relations in a wrong way. I, Sylvia Olayinka Blyden, do not have faith in APC’s current 2012 elections media strategy. I have absolutely NOTHING to do with the current APC Media and Communications Strategy nor am I a member of their Media Team. I am a very independent thinker. My independence is well known to all except for those who have an agenda or a score to settle. My scepticism for the way the Koroma regime is handling the media, has been expressed by me several times and on different occasions; the latest in a piece I entitled as “APC & UDM in Big Dance Na Tight Parlour”!

Our President must surely believe that the way the local and international media is being handled at the moment is proper and correct and for that, I will only say to Mr. President that I trust November 2012 will bring him the results he desires in the face of media strategy deployed by his Media and Public Relations Managers. Again, I am stating it for the record, that I have very little faith in ongoing media strategy being applied for Koroma.

However, President Ernest Koroma is an experienced man in politics and he must have his reasons for allowing what the Information Minister Alhaji I.B. Kargbo must surely be the one advising him to allow. I therefore respect his decision to continue to apply the strategy he is applying within the Media. I just do not believe in it. I have no faith in it. I am not a part of it and I do not even see myself joining such a mis-directed media team.

Now that I have spoken on record that I am NOT a part of APC Media & Communications Strategy, I hope the SLPP will hang heads and realise that I am NOT a member of the APC to be targeted or my parents abused for no good reason. I am an independent thinker.

My strong refusal to help SLPP sweep the criminal tendencies of Julius Maada Bio under the carpet, should not be taken to mean I am representing or speaking on behalf of President Koroma’s candidacy. I am a very independent thinker and most observers know this to be so. Thus, if SLPP continues to viciously focus their lens on me to the extent of publishing a demeaning reference of ‘whore’ to me in their official mouthpiece newspaper, I am sure that very few will blame me if I unleash an appropriate reaction on the SLPP. Like Arnold Akibo-Betts, I find the SLPP’s current antics against my person to be very stupid of them. I am not an APC member nor am I a member of the APC’s Media Strategy but if I decide to react against the SLPP, it will be for sure that the APC will be the beneficiary. This will be final warning to the SLPP. Tomorrow is another day.

BOMBSHELL : Maada Bio fools his supporters as U.S. says no entry visa yet for the former Sierra Leonean warlord

Filed under: Breaking News,Diaspora,Editorial,Headlines,Lead Story |

A United States Embassy official has said that the former Sierra Leonean warlord aspiring  for the presidency , Mr. Julius Maada Bio,  has not yet been granted  an entry visa to come into  the United States of America. Mr. Ahmed Kamara , the Publisher of NEWSTIME AFRICA,  disclosed today that the head of the U.S. Embassy’s Public Affairs Unit, Mr.  Mark Carr, informed him that Bio has not yet applied for the visa, contrary to widespread reports by supporters of the opposition Sierra Leone People’s Party ( SLPP ) that he has been granted multiple entry visas.

Over the weekend, COCORIOKO  learned that after broadcasting to the whole world that Bio was coming to the U.S. and after announcing a series of high-profile fundraising dances on his behalf in America, SLPP  supporters in the U.S.  learnt to their agony that Bio had in fact not been granted any visa yet. Bio had fooled some of them while in London by stating that he had got the visa. Later , he climbed down that he had not yet received it. Bio’s belated admission that he was yet to get a U.S. Visa stunned his followers in America.

Bio was supposed to have arrived in America on Friday June 8 .

Another report received by this paper from some supporters of the ruling All People’s Congress ( APC )  in the U.S.  is that  a source at the U.S. Department of State  informed them today that Bio had appealed against his previous rejection for the same visa but the U.S. Embassy has yet to respond to his request for his case to be reopened. However, the NEWSTIME AFRICA Publisher , Mr. Kamara, was absolutely certain about the information he supplied  today . “I spoke directly with the the Public Affairs Boss of the U.S. Embassy and what he told me was very credible. That is why I have not even hesitated to reveal his name in my article”, Mr. Kamara told this newspaper ” . On the other hand , the APC   supporter who informed this paper about Bio’s appeal was also certain about her information, asserting that she and many officials spoke directly with the U.S. State Department. She believes that Bio may be using two passports , because he is now said to have entered Canada. There is speculation from some Sierra Leoneans who have been talking with this newspaper that Bio may in fact try to sneak into America through the Canadian border by road, though one of them said it could spell disaster for him as he could be arrested for entering the country illegally.

The sum total of these revelations is that Bio has not yet applied for a visa and has not been granted one yet to enter the U.S. Why Bio decided to fool his supporters over such a very crucial issue remains unknown but  COCORIOKO  is monitoring  Mr. Bio’s movements in Canada . WE WILL BRING YOU MORE DETAILS.

HERE IS THE NEWSTIME AFRICA REPORT :

Former Sierra Leone Junta Leader and Human Rights Abuser Julius Maada Bio has

not been granted a visa to enter the United States of America

Written by Ahmed M Kamara on June 11, 2012.

Despite rumour mongering, deliberately being peddled across the U.S. by radical supporters of the Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP), the United States Embassy in Freetown has confirmed to this press that Julius Maada Bio, the SLPP opposition presidential candidate, has not been granted any visa to enter the United States of America. According to the head of the embassy’s Public Affairs Unit, Julius Maada Bio has not applied for any type of visa for entry into the U.S. Mark Carr the head of the unit, insisted that if Maada Bio did apply for visa, his application would be treated just like any other, and any decision would be based on merit. According to Carr, there are wide-ranging issues the U.S. government takes into consideration when granting visas to individuals. Carr had confirmed in the past when asked specifically on issues regarding an individual’s human rights record, that current United States Laws alway play a huge role in how consulates grant visas to enter the country.

This is extremely important, as U.S. president Barack Obama recently pronounced that human rights abusers will not be allowed entry into the United States. But the former junta leader may try to pull a fast one on U.S authorities as reports indicate that he was heading to Canada and may attempt to enter the United States by crossing the border and apply for entry. This might prove too controversial for US authorities as Bio’s recent visit to the UK proved an uncomfortable affair for British officials who turned down all requests by the former brutal dictator for any one-on-one meetings with top government officials. Normally, opposition candidates or leaders are granted audience by host countries as a sign of courtesy and respect, although they are not obligated to do so, but also for sufficient reasons to convey a neutral political stance and non-interference in that country’s internal affairs, they may exercise their right not to.

The outstanding head of the Public Affairs Unit of the US embassy in Freetown, was firm in his country’s commitment to the peace and security of Sierra Leone and said the United States will continue to work with the government and people of Sierra Leone for the overall development of the country. Unlike other diplomatic missions in the country, Carr reiterated his country’s position of non-interference in the internal affairs of Sierra Leone and said it would be the Sierra Leone people who would decide who their next leader/government should be.

Granting Julius Maada Bio a visa to enter the United States of America, would be widely seen as insensitive to the plight of those families whose loved-ones were massacred by Bio and his henchmen during the junta administration’s stint in power between 1994 and 1996. Atrocities that Bio himself is yet to face justice for. But the SLPP’s disgraceful propaganda has once more been exposed as the lies to gain power continue in earnest. The rumour mongering clearly shows the desperation and paranoia that has gripped this once noble political union, as the structure that had held it at the center begins to crumble!

  1. Politicians in this country always fool us.But one amazing thing is that the educated elites always fool the people. They who should be putting good examples turn to behave other wise.We in Sierra Leone we no longer can be fooled. Our eyes are open to the truth development is open .For some of us who are conversant with radios and other international medias we feel very proud of what we always hear about our country. If this politicians feel they would work on people like that wrong those days are gone.

  3. It would seen as if Mr Bio is not interested in speaking to the people of Sierra Leone. When it comes to addressing those who have the votes to put him in the office he so desperately craves he remains mute. The last time Sierra Leoneans were given a hint of his thoughts was when he signed a Press Release, months ago, castigating the government for buying weapons for the Police. Since then he has kept silent.
Frankly, the obsession by the pr0-SLPP press with Mr Bio’s overseas visits to Europe and the Americas is curious, to say the least. He has a lot of questions to answer; questions posed by Sierra Leoneans, not by Europens, not by Canadians, not by Americans. With the elections barely five months away one would have thought that a credible candidate for the presidency would, almost on a daily basis, spend time articulating his vision for the country. But, perhaps, Mr Bio has a “Plan B” for securing the Presidency. WE SHALL SEE!

‘I joined APC to help President Koroma turn Sierra Leone into a paradise’ : Usu Boie

Sunday, June 10th, 2012

‘I joined APC to help President Koroma turn Sierra Leone into a paradise’ : Usu Boie thumbnail June 10, 2012.

Amidst earsplitting applause from the massive crowd at the All People’s Congress ( APC ) Headquarters in Freetown , former Sierra Leone People’s Party ( SLPP ) Presidential flagbearer , Alhaji Usman Boie Kamara, today said that he joined the ruling APC to help President Ernest Bai Koroma turn Sierra Leone into a paradise. The charismatic and crowd-pulling politician was addressing the giant crowd that turned out this afternoon to witness his official declaration for the APC.  (Photo: A delighted Wusu Boie addressing the crowd: Photo credit Jarrah Kawusu Konte)

Following statements by APC officials and other former SLPP Flagbearers who have switched over to the APC, Mr. Boie took the podium to talk. He said that when he resigned from the SLPP, people told him to sit still but he told them that if he did, confusion would return to the country.

He emphasized that he would be doing injustice to the country if he saw President Koroma working hard to develop the country and did not join him.

He complained that the SLPP was not following its philosophy of ONE COUNTRY, ONE PEOPLE . “We are not the ones saying it”, he explained. “They have demonstrated it all over the country for you all to see, so we cannot sit down quietly”. He stated emphatically that he will not be doing justice to the country if he saw the ideals he believed in being violated and he sat still . He preached his belief in the dictum : HONESTY IS THE BEST POLICY.

An engaging speaker, who is also a devout Muslim, Mr. Boie soon went into the Koran and philosophy .He said that the SLPP thought that by marginalizing him they were doing bad to him. But they did not know that inadvertently they were doing good to him. He quoted a passage from the Koran which said that man could do bad things to another but God is able to turn the situation into a blessing. “When the SLPP thought they were doing me evil, unknown to them they were doing good to me to help him come close to my brother, President Ernest Koroma.” (Wild applause from the crowd ).

Mr. Boie Kamara said that God does not want chaos to come to Sierra Leone and so God helped him to join the APC to help unite the country behind President Koroma. He also stressed that he joined the party to help President Koroma solve the problems of the country. He preached peace and said that any country that wants to progress must have peace. He appealed to all and sundry to make sure that no chaos comes to Sierra Leone.

Declaring that there should be no runoff in the presidential elections, he charged APC supporters to play their own parts well so that President Koroma would win at the first ballot. He philosophied that the President , the Vice-President and ministers have their own jobs to do and he, Wusu Boie, will also play his own role to make sure that the President emerges victorious in the November elections and move the country forward . ” I joined the APC so that there will be no runoff in November” (apparently emphasizing that President Koroma deserves a second term because of the good work he has done). He also philosophized that everyone is important and that in politics nobody should be discouraged because everybody’s contribution is important. He told the crowd that he had removed his long pants and donned his short pants to work for the nation. God, he said, wants to bless the country and that is why he helped him join President Koroma.

Mr. Boie , to demonstrate that he did not join the APC alone, said he had brought along Iman Alhaji Y.D. Kamara, the President of the Muslims . He also said that over 500 people had also resigned from the SLPP and that President Koroma would soon be having an audience with them. He assured the crowd that more resignations would soon follow from the sinking SLPP.

The popular politician said that he did not join the APC to get a position. He believes in service. He is not as rich as most people think but what he can say he has in abundance is a good heart and he does not hesitate to share what he has with others. Because of this, he will never suffer on this earth because people with good hearts never suffer. He said that when the SLPP marginalized him, President Koroma told him that he will take him in because he believes that he has a lot to offer his country.

Mr. Boie Kamara thanked everybody for the time they spent to come and make the occasion successful.

He was later given his membership card by President Koroma, making him a full and bona fide member of the APC.

Welcome to the APC: If the SLPP do not know how to utilize you for the national interest , President Koroma does

All true Sierra Leoneans will welcome what is happening in Freetown today . The ruling All People’s Congress ( APC ) will be welcoming into its fold one of the most poular politicians in the nation, Alhaji Usman Wusu Boie Kamara , and two others  mistreated by the opposition Sierra Leone People’s Party ( SLPP ) –Former U.S. Military Major, Ishmael Sengu Koroma and Khadi Johnson-Cole. Politics is about numbers, consensus, constructive engagement and seeking the national interest .

As APC Secretary General, Mr. Victor Foh, has just told Star Radio , the SLPP is all about fragmentation.  It is all the fault of the SLPP. They are not holding on to their members. They are not treating their members well. They are creating a pool of disenchanted politicians who should have been employed to help push this nation forward. In such a tenous and chaotic situation, the APC is doing the right thing to welcome these politicians in the interest of national cohesion and national development.

If the SLPP  lacks the ability to manage people and use them more productively for the national good, then the APC, as the party of the people and as the party in governance has the right to open its arms  to the mistreated politicians and to cultivate and utilize their abilities to help develop the nation. By being able to win those disenfranchized, marginalized and mal treated by the SLPP, the  APC has demonstrated that it is the only party in the nation that is able to unite the nation.  Unisa Alim Sesay ( Awoko ), the popular socialite , rightly told Star Radio that the ability of a good politician is to be able to win over those who do not support you.

The lesson the SLPP  will learn is that tribalism, regionalism and marginalization of people do not pay. Fanatics of the SLPP can say all they want but what is happening today is that they are paying the price for their tribalism, regionalism  and  unnecessary marginalization of people who speak the truth in their midst. Adams Bangura from London , in a text message to Star Radio, said that the SLPP  is not suffering from tribalism but  poor leadership.

Whatever the case, the SLPP has clearly demonstrated that it does not know anything about human resource management  and the meaning of numbers in politics.  They lost power in 2007 when they betrayed Chief Hinga Norman and kicked Charles Margai in the teeth, which led to the formation of the People’s Movement For Democratic Change ( PMDC). They have made another monumental mistake in 2012  by maltreating and  losing the likes of  J.B. Dauda, Wusu Boie , Sengu Koroma, John Leigh, Kadi Johnson-Cole , Lansana Fadika and others.

The SLPP  must learn to listen.

We hope the incoming politicians will throw all their weight behind President Ernest Koroma to help him build a better and prosperous Sierra Leone.

STORY  By Kabs Kanu :

Amidst earsplitting applause from the massive crowd at the All People’s Congress ( APC ) Headquarters in Freetown , former Sierra Leone People’s Party ( SLPP ) Presidential flagbearer , Alhaji Usman Wusu Boie Kamara, today said that he joined the ruling APC  to help President Ernest Bai Koroma turn Sierra Leone into a paradise. The charismatic and crowd-pulling politician was addressing the giant crowd that turned out this afternoon to witness his official declaration for the APC.

He quoted a passage from the Koran which said that man could do bad things to another  but God is able to turn the situation into a blessing . “When the SLPP  thought they were doing me evil, unknown to them  they were doing good to me  to help him come close to my brother, President Ernest Koroma.” (Wild applause from the crowd ).

WUSU BOIE HANDING OVER TO PRESIDENT KOROMA TWO FILES LOADED WITH RESIGNATION LETTERS FROM SLPP OFFICIALS

Declaring that there should be no runoff in the presidential elections , he charged APC supporters to play their own parts well so that President Koroma would win at the first ballot.  He philosophied that the President , the Vice-President and ministers have their own jobs to do and he, Wusu Boie, will also play his own role to make sure that the President emerges victorious in the November elections and move the country forward . ” I joined the APC so that there will be no runoff in November” (  apparently emphasizing that President Koroma deserves a second term because of the good work he has done ). He also philosophied that everyone is important and that in politics nobody should be discouraged because everybody’s contribution is important. He told the crowd that he had removed his long pants and donned his short pants to work for the nation. God , he said, wants to bless the country and that is why he helped him join President Koroma.

Mr. Boie , to demonstrate that he did not join the APC alone, said he has been joined in his declaration today by Iman Alhaji Y.D.

He believes in service .He is not as rich as most people think but what he can say he has in abundance is  a good heart and he does not hesitate to share what he has with others.

‘President Koroma won me over through his development projects in my Kailahun District’ : Former SLPP Presidential aspirant Major Ismael Sengu Koroma

Friday, June 8th, 2012

By KABS KANU :

Former Sierra Leone People’s Party ( SLPP ) Presidential aspirant,  Ishmael Songu Koroma, today refutted all the reasons given by his one-time party for his decision to cross over to the ruling All People’s Congress ( APC ). Contrary to the reasons put out by the SLPP, the retired U.S. Military Major told COCORIOKO  yesterday that he decided to join the APC after he went to his home district, Kailahun, and saw all the marvelous development projects President Ernest Koroma has delivered there. “I was so thrilled and delighted that  I told myself that this is the kind of progressive man I want to work with and I immediately switched over my allegiance to the APC. ”

FORMER U.S. MAJOR ISHMAEL SENGU KOROMA

The retired army officer, one of the many SLPP presidential aspirants aggrieved at the tribalistic and unpatriotic manner the party decided to choose its presidential candidate for the November elections, granted COCORIOKO an exclusive interview  before he boarded his plane at the Boston International Airport for Freetown where, along with other former SLPP Presidential aspirants Mr . Usman Wusu Boie Kamara and Madam Khadi Johnson-Cole, he will be officially joining the ruling APC in a major political event that will rock the city on Saturday.

Asked by this newspaper to explain for the benefit of the public why he really decided to quit the SLPP, Major Koroma took a deep breath and explained. He said that since 1961 when Sierra Leone became independent and Sir Milton Margai governed the country as Prime Minister, he used the SLPP, his party to preach national unity and he brought Sierra Leoneans under one banner with the motto, unity , freedom and justice. He was against tribalism, corruption and injustice. He preached non-violence until he died in 1964 and his brother, Sir Albert Margai, took over. He said that was the SLPP  he grew up to know but he regretted that the SLPP  has changed dramatically over the decades to a tribalistic , violent and unjust political party.

Major Koroma confessed that he was actually against President Koromaand was determined to contest against him  but he explained that when he and the Head of State met , President Koroma told him : “Look here, Major Koroma. Go to your home in Kailahun District and see all the developments I have done there. If you are not impressed, do not bother to come back and meet me. ” Major Koroma, who had lived in the U.S for long , said he went to Kailahun and,  lo and behold,  what he saw there was so remarkable and impressive that he  quickly returned to Freetown and told the President: “Pa, you done woke O nar me district . Tenki, tenki.”  ( “Mr. President, you have done a great job in my home district ” ). The one-time American army officer said that the infrastructural developments President Koroma has carried to Kailahun are  pivotal to national development.

Major Koroma told COCORIOKO that the people of Kailahun are very hardworking and they engage in massive agricultural projects but since time immemorial, they had been unfortunate to have the worst road network in the country and as such had serious problems to move their produce to the headquarter town . “Since God created the planet, Kailahun did not have paved roads”, he emphasized but triumphantly told this newspaper that today the road network is first class . The Pendembu-Segwema Road has been made and all the once dangerous bridges had been reconstructed .”The bridges are like America’s . I have all the pictures “, he stated jubilantly. He said that everybody is praising the President in Kailahun. Even the oldest mosque there has been reconstructed by President Koroma , he explained.

Major Koroma confessed that Sierra Leone would have been the best country in Africa if all the other heads of state we have had since Independence had worked the same manner as President Koroma. And he said that if after the President’s terms, other leaders come and do the same thing, Sierra Leone will be a great nation indeed.

Another achievement the Major singled out was the new salary of teachers. He said that they get paid over Le. 800,000  which was better, compared to the past. “If you have somebody like this, why would you not want to work with him ? “,  he asked.

Mr. Koroma said that he is not looking for a job. He had a very lucrative job as a Major in the U.S , the most powerful nation in the world ,  with lots of benefits , “But the time comes when in the interest of the nation you decide to help somebody who is developing your country. ”

The retired U.S. Army Major said he did not know President Koroma untilhe called him  and asked him to join him  during the last UN General Assembly where the President was singled out among the 53 African heads of state to share the high table with U.S. President Barak OBama and the UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-Moon. He was highly impressed with the recognition given to the President. He marvelled at the recognition President Koroma has brought for the country and disclosed that even in the field of UN Peacekeeping, Sierra Leone is now highly respected and our soldiers in Somalia just captured a town.

COCORIOKO : After Saturday, what next ?

The army major said that then starts the big work to get Kenema and Kailahun  for the APC. He declared that Kailahun had fallen to President Koroma. He predicted that President Koroma will have 55% of the votes there. It is Kenema where a lot of work has to be done, he said. He promised to help to mobilize the youths for the APC. Already, there are 150 teachers in Kenema waiting for him to declare for the APC  themselves.

COCORIOKO asked him what message he had for the SLPP.

In response, Major Koroma said that he had gone on the SLBC and vehemently supported the President. He advised the SLPP  to see the truth. Mr.Koroma stated that flagbearer after flagbearer had said the same things about the SLPP. They should see the truth, he stressed.

Major Koroma , in conclusion, said that because he is a development-oriented Head of State, anybody who goes against President Koroma will fall.

Armed robbery and youth protest in East End : Why try to give them a political twist ?

We are receiving classified information that efforts are being expended to make  the Wellington crisis a political affair .  We have yet to confirm this information but the utterances by supporters of the opposition in internet discussion forms and social networking sites  like FACEBOOK  seem to suggest that the SLPP  is happy with the  chaos and followers are trying vainly to  make  political capital out of it.

I.G. MUNU : The Police has to

With the Presidential elections around the corner and prognostics pointing to a landslide victory for President Ernest Bai Koroma as the opposition Sierra Leone People’s Party ( SLPP )  continues to implode, the Sierra Leone Police owe the nation a duty not to allow the situation to fester. They don’t want to give the opposition an escape route out of their looming defeat or provide them the opportunity to exploit the situation to unleash the chaos that is their second option. They must continue to exercise restraint to boost the  commitment and determination of the ruling All People’s Congress ( APC ) to have  peaceful , fair, free and credible elections in November.

SLPP  supporters should not allow us to remind them that the armed robbery was worse during their rule  and that  its attendant problem of youth protest over the killing of two persons thought to have been bandits by the Police have nothing to do with politics or the government’s ability to maintain national peace and security. Armed robbery is a social problem that bedevils all nations not only in Africa but even the advanced and industrialized countries like Britain and the U.S. Armed robbery is rampant in the U.S.  not because  the Democrats are lax or incapable of governing America. Sierra Leone cannot be the exception.

Peaceful Sierra Leoneans want to see peace and tranquility in the nation and are definitely tired of the politicization of non-political issues to create chaos. The habit is caused by nothing but lack of self-worth, lack of credible achievements to lean on for political leverage and  the unpatriotic  desire  to always see our nation in chaos. It is also caused by the spirit of selfishness by self -seeking politicians who think that they can exploit societal and national chaos to gain power.

We hope we as a people will be reasonable and allow democracy to prevail in Sierra Leone.

Huge loss to the nation : President’s mum Mrs. Alice Rosaline Koroma passes away

Wednesday, June 6th, 2012

Mrs. Alice Rosaline Koroma , the mother of the President His Excellency Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma, passed away suddenly last night. She was 80 years old. The news of this huge loss struck the nation and diaspora by storm this morning after journalists in Freetown and supporters of the President started sending text messages announcing the death of the woman who is loved by multitudes of people for her kindness and humility . Ambassadors and diplomats who had heard the news started calling colleagues all over the world to pass on the sad information.  The  whole of Makeni is in huge shock  as residents who will miss Mrs. Koroma’s kind and loving concern describe her passing as a massive shock.  Throughout her life, she was known as a very kind woman who shared whatever she had, especially food,  with other people . Even when her son became President of Sierra Leone, that did not change her personality as she continued to be a loving, kind and humble woman, providing godly counsel and support to all who desired them.

The death will be a monumental blow to the President because apart from the psychological  and emotional trauma  and  ripples usually caused by the death of a parent , he was very close indeed to his mother but he will be comforted by the fact that his dearly beloved mother passed away without suffering the often painful  throes associated with certain kinds of death. According to family members , she suffered a heart attack during the night and  died shortly after.

Madam Koroma was a good mother who brought up her kids to appreciate the abiding values of love, humility and concern  for other people’s welfare and those who know the family well say that this is reflected in the personality of her children. You will  not find any of them who is not humble. President Koroma’s humble, forgiving and tolerant nature are often attributed to the strong christian training he received from Mammy Alice and his late father, Pa. Sylvanus Koroma.

Though nothing can appease the loss of a dear one, it is also comforting that Mrs. Alice Rosaline Koroma was a devout Christian woman known for her strong and abiding love for and faith in God. PSALM 116:15 says : “Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of His godly ones.” ( New American Standard Bible ). Before he was resurrected , the Lord Jesus Christ assured his disciples :   “Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.” (John 14:1-3 ). Mama Koroma has gone to be with the Lord. I want to comfort the President and family with these words from the infallible Word of God.

ON BEHALF OF THE KANU FAMILY , members of the Covenant Child World Evangelistic Ministry of New Jersey and  the Management and Editorial Boards of Cocorioko and the Sierra Leone Daily Nation newspapers, I extend my heartfelt sympathy to the President, his brothers, sisters and all other members of the family on this incalculable loss. May her soul rest in peace.

I had the enviable honor of meeting her only twice, in the seventies, and it was readily apparent from those meetings that she was full of love, compassion. mercy and generosity. Her passing away is indeed a great loss to all those who knew her. May the Almighty God have mercy on her soul and may she rest in everlasting peace. My condolences to the family and especially to President Koroma, Florence and their other siblings.
